TikTok

Family Pairing, restricted mode, DM controls

Last updated: March 2026

Easy~5 minutes
1

Open Family Pairing

On your phone, open TikTok (you'll need your own TikTok account). Tap the Profile icon, then tap the three-line menu in the top-right corner. Go to "Settings and privacy," then scroll to "Family Pairing." Tap "Parent" to begin setup. You'll see a QR code.

2

Link Your Child's Account

On your child's TikTok app, go to the same path: Profile, then Settings and privacy, then Family Pairing. Tap "Teen." Your child's device will open a camera. Scan the QR code shown on your device. Once linked, you'll have a dashboard on your TikTok account to control your child's settings remotely.

3

Enable Restricted Mode

In Family Pairing on your device, enable "Restricted Mode." This uses TikTok's content filtering to limit videos that may not be appropriate for younger audiences. While not perfect, it reduces the chance of your child seeing mature content. This setting cannot be turned off by your child while Family Pairing is active.

4

Set a Daily Screen Time Limit

In Family Pairing, tap "Daily screen time." Set the maximum time your child can use TikTok each day (options typically range from 40 minutes to 2 hours, or a custom amount). When the limit is reached, a passcode is required to continue. You can also set scheduled breaks (for example, no TikTok between 10 PM and 7 AM).

5

Disable or Restrict Direct Messages

In Family Pairing, go to "Direct messages." For accounts under 16, TikTok disables DMs by default. For teens 16-17, set direct messages to "No one" to completely disable DMs, or "Friends" to allow messaging only between mutual friends. This is one of the most important settings because DMs are where most predator contact happens.

6

Set Comment Controls

In Family Pairing, go to "Comments." Set who can comment on your child's videos to "Friends" or "No one." This prevents strangers from commenting on your child's content. Also consider going into your child's privacy settings directly and setting their account to "Private" so only approved followers can see their videos.

Pro Tips

  • Set your child's TikTok account to "Private" so only approved followers can see their content. This is separate from Family Pairing and must be done in the Privacy settings.
  • Disable "Suggest your account to others" in Privacy settings to prevent your child's profile from appearing in recommendations to strangers.
  • Talk to your child about the "For You Page" algorithm. Explain that TikTok shows more of what you engage with, which can create rabbit holes into harmful content.

What This Doesn’t Cover

  • Restricted Mode is not foolproof. Inappropriate content can still slip through TikTok's automated filters.
  • Family Pairing only controls the linked account. Your child could create a second TikTok account using a different phone number or email.
  • You cannot see your child's browsing history, watch history, or the content of their messages through Family Pairing.
